And Again the Torch Passes

Sen. Edward Kennedy was, by any measure, a remarkable legislator.  For 46 years of dedicated service to the United States of America, he authored thousands of bills, some of which became law, was a stalwart supporter of the middle-class, and consistently challenged America to expand the basic right of healthcare to more and more of its citizens.

However, he was equally well known for the successes of his family.  The Kennedy’s were an American dynasty, politically and culturally.  No other family has, in the past half century, come to more symbolize the ideals and vision of liberalism.  The 1960’s were, and are still, defined by Teddy’s brothers, John and Bobby.

Similarly, Sen. Kennedy has defined and symbolized the Democratic Party, through his unwavering dedication to its values, which …

Krugman is Wrong

Paul Krugman’s column in today’s New York Times claimed that opponents of the “public option” were “gaining traction…simply by repeating, over and over again, that the public option would be, horrors, a government program.”

He also wrote that opponents of the public option “have offered no coherent arguments against it.”

This is wrong.

The fact is that, opponents have argued against a public option because similar government programs, such as Medicare, which it is often compared to, do not have a strong track record of success.

Medicare, a government program, is a fiscal nightmare.  It has accumulated tens of trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities and is often cited, by both Democrats and Republicans, as needing serious reform.

A similar government program, such as a public option, would likely add many more trillions of dollars in debt to the government’s balance sheet and lead to further tax hikes on average Americans, in the not too distant future.

Deficits Continue Rising

Budget forecasts, to be released next week by the Obama Administration, are expected to predict that federal deficits will reach $9 trillion over the next decade.

The $9 trillion number is up $2 trillion from earlier Obama Administration predictions.

By these predictions, the national debt could easily reach as high as $20 trillion by 2020, well over 150 percent of GDP.

If President Obama wishes to be remembered as a truly transformative president, he must pick up where President Clinton left off, and contain Washington’s reckless spending.

Fmr. Sect. of Homeland Security Speaks Out

In his new book, former Sect. of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, claims that members of the Bush Administration pressured him to raise the national alert level, on the eve of the 2004 election.

The incident was one of the reasons he later resigned, according to Ridge, and is further evidence of the Bush Administration’s abuses of power.

However, this incident is particularly disgraceful because it goes to show that even national security was deliberately politicized inside the Bush White House.

So much for the Republican Party being the party of national security.

An Overextended President?

President Obama’s fight to win over the hearts and minds of the American public, in support of healthcare reform, has been all but lost.

New poll numbers, released by NBC, show that more Americans disapprove of Obama’s handling of healthcare than approve of it.  Additionally, 42 percent of Americans say that Obama’s healthcare reform plan is a bad idea, and 40 percent believe that it will result in deteriorating the quality of their healthcare.

Even more worrying, nearly one-out-of-two Americans believe that proposed healthcare reform plans will lead to a government takeover of healthcare and give the government the ability to withhold medical care from the elderly.

What has gone so wrong?

Frankly, the White House is failing to effectively relay …
