The Freedom to Smoke?
Our generation of Americans might be the most health conscious ever, but what do we think about the right to smoke?
I don’t smoke, cigarettes make me and many in my family have actually died from some kind of cancer, but I’ve been surprised at the continuing momentum governments are gathering against tobacco companies and smoking. For instance, New York’s Mayor Bloomberg finished the job Guiliani started of sterilizing Manhattan, which might be reaching the point where it’s lost its edge.
It’s nice to walk into a restaurant for three minutes and not come out reeking like smoke, but now they’re talking about allowing New York landlords to put restrictions on smoking in your own apartment living room!
And how about regulating food in restaurants? I like how some local governments have started passing laws against trans fats in restaurants but is it going too far for Chicago to debate foi gras veal?
And I don’t like cigarette companies and think they should be taxed more, but do governments or even ballot initiatives have the right to do this stuff?
