I’m contradicting myself by fueling the Gates-Crowley fire again, but the sparks reach a new height in an email sent by police officer. The CNN clip shows Boston police officer Justin Barrett apologizing for using the phrase “jungle monkey” four times in an email about Robert Gates’ behavior. Barrett says he is not a racist and that he has friends who are “all types of cultures and races.” His lawyer points out that he did not call Gates the name, but used it to describe Gates’ his behavior. Barrett sent the following in an email to the author of a Boston Globe editorial who wrote a column on the Gates arrest, and copied the note to his friends on the national guard:
“If I was the officer he verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC…”
Barrett has since been suspended from his duties as a member of the National Guard and a Boston police officer.
