Al Franken, the former Saturday Night Live writer, is now officially a member of the U.S. Senate after having been sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden Tuesday.
As the junior Senator from Minnesota, Franken will serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Committee of Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, the Committee on Indian Affairs and the Committee on Aging.
Although he is known for his comedy, Franken has kept his political remarks serious, pledging to work for the people of his state.
His fellow Democrat and Minnesota Senator, Amy Klobuchar, put it succinctly:
We all know Al spent some time in comedy … But during this long campaign he has demonstrated he takes his job seriously … His heart is with middle class families who work hard, live responsibly, and know the rules. He knows their hopes and fears because he has lived it.
With that said, let the age of the (potential) fillibuster-proof majority for the Democrats begin.
