Ever heard of those government roleplay games, where you pretend you’re in charge and deal with different situations? Well, here’s one for you: the Associated Press reports that there is intelligence indicating that North Korea will be firing a missile at Hawaii sometime in early July (about ten to fifteen days from today). The North Koreans have often exaggerated their capabilities when it comes to launching missiles, but the threat remains. Furthermore, the Joint Chiefs of Staff have said they believe that the North Koreans could acquire the ability to launch a missile and hit the western coast of the United States within three to five years.
How do you respond to this situation? Do you warn the North Koreans that an attempted missile attack upon US soil will result in an attempted (and undoubtedly more successful) missile attack on North Korea? Do you install missile defense systems in Hawaii and hope for the best? Do you preempt their supposed attack with one of their own? Do you just wait it out and hope the intelligence was bad or that the North Koreans have again exaggerated their capabilities?
You have two weeks, Mr./Mrs. President. What do you do?
