On the heels of a term-low 59 percent approval rating recorded Tuesday, President Obama’s public support has increased to 67 percent following his televised address to Congress, according to a recent Gallup poll.
Though it was not a State of the Union address, it was Obama’s first address to a joint session of Congress since he assumed office.
Strong support from Democrats and Independents certainly helped this recent boost, but it was the significant increase in Republican support that really put Obama over the edge. As recent as Tuesday, only 27 percent of Republicans approved of the job Obama was doing. But following his congressional address that number was as high as 42 percent.
Of those who reported watching or listening to the speech, 57 percent said they are now more confident in the president’s plan to repair the economy.
Obama is certainly on par with his historical counterparts after the first month in office. Gallup polls dating back to Richard Nixon’s first term in 1969 have the average presidential job approval ratings after one month at 62 percent.
