The New York Times reported earlier today that Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius is the leading candidate to be nominated as secretary of health and human services.
The report comes two weeks after former South Dakota senator Tom Daschle withdrew as the nominee after he failed to pay more than $128,000 in taxes.
Sebelius is no political newcomer. Her father, John J. Gilligan, served as the governor of Ohio from 1971-75, while her father-in-law is former Republican congressman Keith Sebelius.
In both of her successful gubernatorial campaigns, Sebelius ticketed a Republican running-mate. If officially nominated and confirmed to the cabinet, she will be replaced by Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson, the former Kansas state GOP party chairman.
While Sebelius has proven she is willing to work with the GOP, here controversial stances on abortion make her a decisive choice.
A Roman Catholic, she was told by the Kansas City Archbishop to stop receiving communion following a series a pro-choice actions.
Last April, Sebelius vetoed Senate Bill 389, which would have required detailed medical justification for late-term abortions and would have also allowed people to sue an abortion provider if they thought that a relative was planning a late-term abortion in violation of Kansas law.
If confirmed, Sebelius’ departure from Kansas’ political scene could have serious implications in state elections in the upcoming years. She is seen as the leading Democratic contender to replace Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, who is expected to run for governor.
